Family CALYPTOSTOMATIDAE Oudemans, 1923

Introduction

Members of this little-known family have predatory adults that occur in wet litter and moss, and larvae that are parasites of aquatic insects (Walter et al., 2009). The single known genus includes only a few species. Most are known from Europe, with some records from Africa and North America. Wainstein (1977) reviewed the species known to that date. The Australian fauna of Calyptostomatidae includes two species from Queensland, both of which are inadequately described and may be misidentified. Maķol & Wohltmann (2012) catalogued the world fauna and recorded the Malaysian species C. latiseta Shiba, 1976 from Tasmania.

Introduction

In addition to the named species listed here, unidentified species of Calyptostoma have been reported from Australia by Noble et al. (1996).

Species Calyptostoma extranea (Koch, 1867)

Introduction

Oudemans (1941) stated that Smaridia extranea Koch, 1867 belonged in the family Calyptostomidae, but not in the genus Calyptostoma. However, since only one genus is recognised in this family, I have no alternative but to list this species as Calyptostoma extranea, until its position is resolved.

Species Calyptostoma latiseta Shiba, 1976

Introduction

Beron (2008) listed Calyptostoma latiseta Shiba, 1976 as a synonym of Calyptostoma velutinum (Müller, 1776). However, Saboori et al (2012) showed that these are two different species, and that usage is followed here. Calyptostoma latiseta was recorded from Tasmania by Mąkol & Wohltmann (2012, 2013).

Species Calyptostoma velutinus (Müller, 1776)

Introduction

The Australian record of this species by Womersley (1942) is very dubious, since it is otherwise known only from the Holarctic Region (Maķol & Ehrnsberger 2012).
