Species Sigmaxinella flabellata (Carter, 1885)

  • Type data:

    Syntype(s) BMNH 1886.12.15.471 dry (NMV photo 48/13) –471a, slide 2/80), 33 m, Port Phillip Heads, VIC; BMNH 1886.12.15.143 wet –143a, slide 2/80, 33 m, Port Phillip Heads, VIC
Comment: Syntype BMNH 1886.12.15.471 is a species of Raspailia (Raspailiidae). It is also unlikely that the other Syntype (BMNH 1886.12.15.143) was reexamined for the redescription of this species by Dendy (1897), as Hallmann's (1916) meticulous redescription of the species notes that he merely "compared" his own new material with a specimen of Dendy - i.e. neither appear to have checked the type material in the BMNH. Consequently, the species is used in the sense of Dendy (1885) until corroborated by reexamination of the wet syntype.
