Superfamily FEAELLOIDEA Ellingsen, 1906

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

The Feaelloidea are amongst the most unusual of all pseudoscorpions and their systematic position has been the subject of speculation. Harvey (1988 1992) presented arguments for including them, as the sister-group to the Chthonioidea, in the suborder Epiocheirata. The two feaelloid families have markedly contrasting and disjunct distributions, and Australia is the only region of the world where both are present, albeit at opposite ends of the continent.

Diagnosis

Feaelloids can be easily distinguished from other pseudoscorpions by the presence of 3–6 anterior carapaceal lobes.

Family FEAELLIDAE Ellingsen, 1906

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

The Feaellidae are represented by 11 species recorded from various disjunct tropical areas such as Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and north-western Australia. Only a single genus, Feaella, is currently recognised and several subgenera are in use (Harvey 1991).

Diagnosis

Feaellids can be distinguished from pseudogarypids by the raptorial pedipalps, the lack of a median maxillary lyrifissure, the cheliceral flagellum reduced to a single blade, and the carapace and tergite I with an unusual articulation joint.

Family PSEUDOGARYPIDAE Chamberlin, 1923

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

The Pseudogarypidae are found in habitats such as under bark of trees, under rocks, in leaf litter and in caves. Currently two genera and seven Recent species are recognised; three species are known from Baltic amber (Harvey 1991). Neopseudogarypus scutellatus Morris is Australia's only representative and is restricted to Tasmania.

Diagnosis

The Pseudogarypidae can be distinguished easily from all other pseudoscorpions by the presence of carapaceal alae.
