Superfamily CYAMIOIDEA G.O. Sars, 1878

Introduction
Given the considerable uncertainties regarding the classification of Cyamioidea and Galeommatoidea, we maintain the traditional classification here until more comprehensive revisionary work involving sampling of additional key taxa is undertaken. Basteriotiidae is often treated as a separate family from Sportellidae in recent works, but no real justification has been offered; here the genus Basterotia is maintained in the Sportellidae. Also, molecular studies (Giribet & Distel 2003; Taylor et al. 2007; Goto et al. 2012) have Basterota included within Galeommatoidea. Gamardia was shown by Taylor et al. (2007) to be far removed from Galeommatoidea, but there are no DNA data for Cyamium or similar genera.
Placed in Leptonidina by Carter et al. 2011.

Introduction
Spheriids are a cosmopolitan family of freshwater heterodont bivalves, commonly known as pea-shells. These small, round, regular, fragile bivalves have the beak approximately centrally to somewhat posteriorly placed, usually weak hinge teeth and tiny pores in the shell. They are hermaphrodites and brood their young in pouches in their gills.
Sphaeridae are found in mud in streams, creeks, ponds and almost any permanent or semipermanent water. They are usually found in large numbers and occur in mountain bogs above the snow-line to freshwater pools in desert areas. Good summaries of the family can be found in Brunckhorst (1998) and Korniushin (2000). This list is based on a recent revision of the Australian members of the family by Korniushin (2000).
