Introduction

As treated here the group includes three families after Compagno (1999). Some authors recognise Platyrhinidae and Zanobatidae as distinct familes or as subfamilies of the Rhinobatidae. Some authors also include the Rhinidae and Rhynchobatidae as subfamilies of the Rhinobatidae. See Nelson (2006) for discussion of various classifications.
