Species Haemaphysalis bancrofti Nuttall & Warburton, 1915

Introduction

The early records of this species in Australia involve many mistakes and misidentifications, especially in the use of the names Haemaphysalis leachi and Haemaphysalis leachi var. australis, by Froggatt (1900), Rainbow (1906), Neumann (1911), Ferguson (1925), Fielding (1926), and others. Roberts (1963) reviewed these records in detail, and showed that Haemaphysalis leachi and Haemaphysalis leachi var. australis do not occur in Australia, and that these records almost certainly refer to Haemaphysalis bancrofti. Barker & Walker (2014) reviewed the biology and morphology of this species in detail.

Haemaphysalis papuana Thorell was recorded from Australia by Canestrini (1884) and Rainbow (1906), but Roberts (1963) showed that these records also refer to H. bancrofti.
