Species Aceria tosichella Keifer, 1969

Introduction

Aceria tulipae (Keifer, 1938) has often been confused with Aceria tosichella Keifer, 1969. It is now known that A. tulipae occurs only on bulb-forming plants such as onions and ornamental bulbs. Aceria tosichella occurs only on grasses, and is the vector of wheat streak mosaic virus (Amrine & Stasny, 1994). Both species are the subject of a very extensive literature, which is reviewed by Lindquist et al. (1996). Information about the occurrence of both species in Australia was reviewed by Halliday & Knihinicki (2004). There is growing evidence that the species known as Aceria tosichella in Australia and elsewhere is a complex of several species, possibly with different ranges of host plants and virus vector capabilities (Schiffer et al. 2009; Miller et al., 2012; Skoracka et al., 2012). The systematics and biology of this species were comprehensively reviewed by Navia et al. (2013).
